Get to Know Tony Z

Born and raised on the sunny coast of Los Angeles, with over three decades of experience in all aspects of surfing and its culture, Tony Zapata has long been a valuable asset to Malibu’s surf scene.

By the age of 13, Tony made his competitive surfing debut earning 6th out of a hundred and fifty surfers at the WSA West Coast Invitationals. By 15, he was placing 1st in surfing events and profiled in Surfer Magazine. And as a professional volleyball player, Tony was a winner of two out of three medals in Chile representing USA, as event winner in Montreal Canada competing representing USA, and a seven time champion of the prestigious Manhattan Beach 6-man Volleyball Tournament before moving on to coaching at Malibu High (two undefeated seasons) and Our Lady of Malibu (his Alma mater), as well as introducing beach volleyball clubs (Zuma Beach).

Tony’s background coaching pro volleyball made way for his transition to surf coaching. Teaching others is a mindset that comes naturally to Tony. He practices a See-Feel-Trust methodology, teaching an understanding of not only the ocean and surfing techniques, but also conquering fears and anxieties that come with trying something new. Tony will push you to be the best you can be while having fun, and celebrating your victories along the way.

Tony is First Aid CPR certified.
